We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer specializing in Substation Protection & Control (P&C) to join our clients engineering team. This is can either be an in office or fully remote position focused on the technical execution and oversight of complex substation design projects. The successful candidate will serve as a technical authority, translating high-level project requirements into detailed engineering packages for medium to high voltage (MV to HV) substations, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and solar collector sites. While this role is primarily engineering focuses, it requires a deep understanding of field service operations to ensure that designs are constructible, NETA compliant and optimized for long-term operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and refine comprehensive P&C design packages, including one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams
- Design sophisticated protection schemes for bus, line, capacitor, and transformer equipment, including the development of relay settings and logic
- Perform essential system studies, including fault current analysis, voltage drop calculations, and insulation coordination
- Specify and design SCADA communication systems and integrated substation automation architectures
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, drafters, and designers to ensure technical consistency across all deliverables.
- Serve as the Technical Authority for P&C systems, conducting rigorous peer reviews for accuracy and compliance with client and utility standards
- Manage the full project lifecycle, including scheduling, budget management, and resource allocation to meet strict deadlines
- Develop and implement standardized Quality Control (QC) checklists to streamline the design-construction transition
- Collaborate closely with field teams to provide real time design modifications and troubleshooting support for construction or commissioning discrepancies
- Support business development efforts by providing technical input for proposals and participating in client presentations
- Ensure all designs strictly adhere to OSHA, NETA, and NFPA 70E safety and industry standards
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related technical field
- 8+ years of experience in P&C engineering, with a proven track record of designing MV/HV substation systems.
- Advanced proficiency in protection and control philosophy, relay logic, and industry-standard design software
- Ability to work consistently at a desk, with occasional site visits (less than 10%) as required by project milestones.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License (or the ability to obtain one) is highly preferred
- Deep familiarity with NETA and NICET testing standards to ensure design-for-testability
