The Senior Protection & Controls Field Engineer provides expert level substation design, engineering, commissioning and technical support across utility and industrial sectors. This role covers medium to high voltage (MV to HV) substations, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and solar collector sites

The group has scaled to 50–100 employees globally, driven by a strong trajectory of $8M to $20M+ in annual revenue over a ~5 year period. They growing their capabilities to delivery full service low, medium, and high-voltage electrical power system solutions to public utilities, heavy industrial facilities and renewable energy sectors.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers, technicians, and drafters/designers
- Serve as the technical authority for P&C systems, providing training and development for junior staff
- Support business development through technical proposal input and client presentations
- Oversee project lifecycles, including scheduling, budget management, and quality control
- Develop and refine P&C packages: one-line/three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams
- Design protection schemes for bus, line, capacitor, and transformer equipment, including relay settings
- Perform system studies: fault current, voltage drop, and insulation coordination
- Specify and design SCADA communication systems and substation layouts
- Oversee and perform acceptance testing and commissioning of transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, and protective relays
- Execute relay functional testing, end-to-end testing, and system integration
- Troubleshoot complex electrical and control system issues during installation and operation
- Ensure strict adherence to OSHA, NETA and NFPA 70E safety standards
- Review all project deliverables for technical accuracy and compliance with client/utility standards
- Develop and implement quality control checklists for both design and field execution
- Modify designs in real-time to resolve construction or commissioning discrepancies
Requirements
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or related field
- 8+ years of experience in P&C engineering, with at least 2+ years specifically in field testing/commissioning of MV/HV systems
- Advanced knowledge of LOTO, Arc Flash and shock hazard procedures
- Ability to travel extensively (up to 75%) to project sites
- Must be legally authorized to work in the US
Certifications & Licenses
- NETA Level III or IV certification (or equivalent, such as NICET) preferred
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
