The Substation Apparatus Technician is responsible for performing advanced technical work involving the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage substation equipment. This role ensures the reliable operation of substations through expert diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and complex troubleshooting. As a senior member of the field team, you will provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior technicians while assisting in the development of standardized maintenance programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of substation apparatus, including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage regulators, capacitors, reactors, and relays
- Troubleshoot complex equipment malfunctions to ensure compliance with electrical codes, safety regulations, and internal quality standards
- Conduct comprehensive electrical and mechanical tests, including Power Factor, TTR, Doble, SFRA, Insulation Resistance, and Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)
- Maintain precise commissioning and maintenance records, test results, and equipment histories within the asset management system
- Read and interpret complex electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control wiring diagrams, and manufacturer technical manuals
- Lead and oversee field commissioning or maintenance crews, ensuring strict adherence to safe work practices and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures
- Coordinate with engineers and system operations to plan equipment outages, commissioning sequences, and the energization of new installations
- Train and mentor apprentice and journeyman-level technicians in testing procedures, safety standards, and industry best practices
- Respond to substation outages and system emergencies as required, including work outside of standard business hours
Requirements
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Power Systems, or related field (equivalent military or utility training accepted)
- 3+ years of direct experience in substation maintenance, testing, and commissioning
- Demonstrated experience working with high-voltage (69kV – 500kV) systems and specialized apparatus testing equipment
- Advanced understanding of substation design, protection systems, and power equipment operation
- Proficiency with industry-standard testing software and hardware (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger).
- NETA Level III or IV, NICET, or equivalent certification preferred
- OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, and Switching & Tagging certifications preferred
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to lift up to 70 lbs, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and within confined spaces
- Ability to travel (fly and drive) frequently, up to 75% of the time
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check; must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
